Kalshi has reached an unprecedented milestone in the US betting market. According to data from analytics firm Apptopia cited by Bloomberg, the app registered over 3 million downloads during January 2025, on the eve of the Super Bowl.

This figure represents a historic achievement. “Three million downloads in a single month is a feat that no other sports betting app, real-money gaming app, or fantasy sports app has ever achieved in the United States,” Tom Grant, vice president of research at Apptopia, told Bloomberg.
Kalshi Surpassing Traditional Leaders
The figure is even more significant when compared to the numbers of traditional operators. Both DraftKings and FanDuel, historically the most popular mobile sportsbooks in the country, reported less than 1 million downloads each during the same period.
This contrast marks a notable shift in market dynamics. Until a few months ago, Kalshi lagged considerably behind these established companies in terms of user acquisition.
Kalshi’s Legal Advantage
The key to Kalshi’s success lies in its unique regulatory structure in the United States. Unlike traditional sportsbooks, the platform operates under the supervision of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), which classifies its contracts as federally regulated financial instruments.
This distinction is crucial. While platforms like DraftKings and FanDuel must obtain state gaming licenses to operate in each jurisdiction, Kalshi can legally offer its services nationwide without the need for individual state authorizations. Traditional betting remains subject to state gaming regulations that vary significantly between states.
Shift in User Interest
The drastic increase in downloads suggests a shift in consumer preferences towards prediction markets, especially around major events like the Super Bowl. These platforms allow users to bet on the outcomes of various events, from sports to politics and economics.

Kalshi’s growth coincides with a general increase in interest in prediction markets in the United States, partly driven by high-profile electoral and sporting events.
Pending Regulatory Challenges
Despite its download success, Kalshi faces regulatory hurdles. In recent months, Tennessee’s gambling regulator issued a cease and desist order against the platform.
However, a federal judge later granted a temporary injunction allowing Kalshi to continue operating while legal disputes are resolved. This case reflects the tension between federal and state regulation in the emerging prediction market sector.
Betting Market Outlook
The Kalshi phenomenon raises questions about the future of the betting industry in the United States. The nationwide ease of access offered by its regulatory model could pose a significant competitive threat to traditional operators who must navigate a mosaic of state regulations.
The coming months will determine whether this explosive growth translates into long-term active users or if it represents a temporary spike related to specific events.
